The images are from cameras placed inside a Barn Owl nestbox on the island of Islay, Inner Hebrides, Scotland.
The 2010 season
For this third year of our owl cam, we now have three small cameras, giving excellent views of the whole box as well as high resolution pictures. The images should be in colour during the daytime and in black and white in the evening and at night.
Latest news - Tuesday, 31st August 2010
Well, it looks as if the Barn Owl chick has finally decided to fledge, being last seen earlier on yesterday and not at all during the evening or this morning. Nick-named "Home Alone", it has presumably enjoyed being the object of sole attention by its parents, not having to compete for food with any siblings. It is not impossible that it may return from time to time but is just as likely to be roosting in nearby farm buildlings, which is where its parents spend their days.
Thanks
The Islay Natural History Trust is grateful to Scottish Natural Heritage for grant aid towards the costs of this project, and to Michael Thomson of Gribloch Design Ltd., Bowmore, for so willingly providing his technical skills. Bruichladdich Distillery were also very helpful in allowing Michael time off from his work for them to install and test the equipment. We also thank James Brown for a generous donation.
