Lots of interesting talk on local wildlife to come in 2026
We have been missing our evening talks in the latter half of last season, however this is all about to change, we have a plethora of speakers willing to give their time to provide us with interesting talks about interesting wildlife. We have the Species on the Edge Project partnered with RSPB locally with a range of speakers to talk about wildlife that they are working to conserve. These will be starting with a talk on the Marsh Fritillary butterfly and bats this Monday 26th January 7.30, with visiting ecologists Mhairi Hume (Butterfly Conservation) and Kelly Bow (Bat Conservation Trust).
We will be progressing with the Species in the Edge theme each month, with our AGM on 26th February which will feature a talk from Dave Wood RSPB talking us through 'Chough, Dung Beetles and Veterinary Medicines'. March will be terns and April into May, Corncrakes, Medicinal Leeches and Greenland white-fronted geese. So much of our local wildlife to highlight and get excited about.
But before those we have a visiting beekeeper from the Western Galloway Beekeepers Association, Linda Robertson currently on the island who will be giving us a talk on 'Bees and Honey' on 5th of February. Any local beekeepers missing their bee fix over the winter that feel like getting together and talking about bees and anyone interested in beekeeping and honey, a fascinating topic, come join us. This might be an opportunity to develop a regular beekeepers group to share knowledge and help new beekeepers along and we will arrange a subsequent bee chat/get together Q&A late February/March.
Lots of talks means lots of cake, so come along for a nice social evening learning and talking about local wildlife and everyone is invited.
So put the dates in your diaries and we look forward to seeing you at the centre over the coming months:
26th Jan - Marsh Frits and Bats 7.30pm
5th Feb - Bees and Honey, your questions answered with Linda Robertson
26th Feb - INHT AGM + "Chough, Dung Beetles & Veterinary Medicines" Dave Wood RSPB

22nd April - Corncrake with Louise Muir RSPB
